You are here: Homework | Reading
Learning to read is one of the most important things that your child will learn to do at primary school. Not only is reading the foundation of the school curriculum, reading opens the door to a lifetime of enjoyment through all kinds of texts. Independent readers can navigate all aspects of life more successfully, and reading for pleasure has been shown to boost academic achievement across the school curriculum at primary and secondary school. Being an avid reader has been shown to boost children’s self-image and their sense of wellbeing, as well as improving their life chances whatever their family background and experience.
In Years1, 2 and 3, your child will take home reading books at the appropriate reading level, selected by the class teacher. Children are expected to read for at least 5 minutes every day. Please remember to sign your child’s yellow reading record book after each reading session.
In Y4 and Y5, children who are reading fluently will have a green KS2 reading record book. This is like a journal where children record what they have read and their opinions about the text. Children are expected to read for at least 5 minutes every day. Please remember to monitor and sign the green reading record books to check that your child is reading regularly.
